Directed by Anthony Bean, Choreography is by Ieasha Prime, Scenic design by John Grimsley, lighting design by Lyn F. Caliva, and costumes by Wanda (Ms. B) Bryant.
Written by Ntozake Shange, the Tony Award-nominated and Obie Award-winning play weaves lush movement and graceful verse into a truly stirring portrait of seven amazing black women trapped in their sex, color, and environment. Each womans journey is unique, yet each seamlessly blends with the stories of the other six women to form one, united voice of pride and power. The play, which premiered on Broadway in 1976, was the inspiration for Tyler Perrys recent film For Colored Girls.
Choreography is by Ieasha Prime, who also recreates a role she played on Broadway. Finding the role remains potent, timely, and emotionally charged, Mrs. Prime is happy to revive it in June under the courageous yet sensitive direction of Anthony Bean. Mrs. Prime originally performed this controversial theater piece under the direction of the Tony award winning director & choreographer George Faison. This time Ieasha is the choreographer. Prime intends to breathe new life into the dance and movement of this choreopoem. "The dance of the piece is so fueled by the rhythmic eloquence of Shange's language, it is a joy to recreate for a New Orleans audience", says Prime.
Also starring veterans of ABCT stage. Donna King plays Green, Sheleta Burke-Manuel plays Brown, Dorshena M. Pittman as Purple, Giselle Nakhid as Orange, Lauren Channell as Yellow, and Toya T Church Thomas as Red. Bean adds a distinctly ABCT touch in the form of the Colored Girls Chorus, which uses contemporary music to highlight the moods and themes. Colored Girl Chorus includes Asia Nelson, Leah Rouege and Reggina Thompson.Starring
